OKay, as your friend I must ask that you go asap and read the following:

Time Traveler's Wife (pox on the movie!)
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (or whatever that one is called)

And A Fine Balance is just too much for reading. Really - the book had a happier spot when it was only that the family being talked about was torched to death in their house. Seriously bummed out book. Srly.

I'd only read between 1 and 4 of the books in each section. That's because I read books I want to read, not ones people think I should be reading.

In fact quite a few of the books on those lists that I have read, I read because I had to for study purposes. And most of those I hated. Hated. So, recommended lists are not all that, IMHO.
